Kyber Drop 2023

Project Overview

We were invited to take charge of supplying, programming, and operating the lighting and lasers for Kyber Drop 2023, a three-day festival held in the picturesque hills of Hampshire. Hosting 500 attendees, the festival featured a live music stage, a dance stage, a chillout area, local food vendors, and various workshops throughout the weekend.

Creative Vision and Execution

The creative direction for the dance stage was to craft an enticing atmosphere that drew festival-goers onto the dance floor. Lighting fixtures were positioned above the audience to enhance the immersive experience, while a third laser was zoned to the top of the opposing hill, adding an inticing visual element to the outdoor setting.

Technical Setup

For this project, we utilized the following equipment:

4 x Chauvet Intimidator 355 IRC
3 x Strobes: 2 Neo Flash 50, 1 Neo Flash 150
4 x Tarm 2.5 lasers
6 x ADJ Mega Hex PARs
The strobe lights were strategically placed behind the stage decor and over the dance floor, creating dynamic, high-impact visuals. The central stage decor was initially planned to be projection-mapped, serving as the focal point for the dance stage. However, an unforeseen issue arose when the projector bulb failed on-site.

Adaptation and Laser Mapping

To ensure the client's vision was still realized, we adapted by using a laser to map the stage artwork. A single laser, controlled via Beyond software, was employed for this purpose. While effective, there were some limitations in terms of the detail that could be displayed, particularly due to the constraints of using just one laser. If this setup were to be revisited, we would recommend using a second laser with distributed scanning enabled. This would allow for more intricate detail while also reducing flickering, resulting in a smoother, more refined visual output.

Conclusion

Despite the technical setback, the event was a resounding success, and we were proud to contribute to the visual spectacle of Kyber Drop 2023. By quickly adapting to on-site challenges and delivering a captivating experience through creative lighting and laser mapping, we played an essential role in bringing the client’s vision to life.
